Registration

To participate in experiments at the Center for Experimental Social Science (CESS), you must register in our ORSEE database. As part of the registration process, you will be asked to provide basic contact information, and some demographic information.

Only current NYU undergraduates and Master's students are eligible to participate in CESS experiments. You must bring your unexpired NYU ID card to each session, so that CESS researchers can verify your status.

You can only register once in the ORSEE database. Registering multiple accounts undermines our scientific research. If you create more than one account, one or both accounts will be deleted from the system and you may not be able to participate in our experiments. If you have lost your account information, send us an email and we will reply with your account information.

Participating in an Experiment

  • A certain number of registered persons will receive an invitation email to each experiment. The exact number is determined by the researcher conducting that experiment. Only the invited persons may take part in that experiment.
  • We usually run several sessions of the same experiment. If you receive an invitation and wish to participate, sign up for a session by following the link included in your invitation email.
  • By signing up for a session, you commit to participating in that session. Once you sign up for a session, you cannot later change your registration on ORSEE, so please verify that you are actually able to come before you sign up for a session.
  • To ensure that we have enough participants for each session, we sometimes invite more people than are required. If you arrive on time but we cannot accommodate your participation in the experiment, you will be paid a show-up payment.
  • You will be compensated for participating in our experiments. Payment includes a show-up payment and a payment that depends on the choices you make during the experiment.
  • Please bring your NYU ID card to the experiment.
  • It is important that you arrive on time to the session you signed up for. Otherwise, the entire session may be delayed or cancelled. This is unfair to the other participants.
  • After a session's scheduled start time, anyone who signed up for a session but did not show up will not receive any compensation for that experiment. We track the number of "no-shows" for each person in our ORSEE participant pool, and reserve the right to remove people with an excessive number of no-shows from the participant pool.
